Looking for Winter Work-Out Ideas

Hey all,

So ... I need your, and your friends, collective wisdom on ideas for working out in the winter in a city. Here's the current state of affairs:

* I'm having an incredibly tough time motivating getting up in the morning to run in the park

* I already walk about a mile on weekdays as part of my commute, and 2-3 miles each day on the weekends. (Not that I'm against more walking.)

* I have about 6 foot wide, 4 foot deep space between my couch and my TV in which to move in my apartment. Otherwise, I'd be jazzercizing in my kitchen.

* Don't have a ton of money right now, especially since I just started going back to WW and I'm above my goal weight, so even though I'm Lifetime, I have to pay that pesky per meeting fee.

So, with all those annoying parameters, any ideas on how I can get my a** moving this winter? One thing to know about me, I lurve walking around and living in the city, so for the most part, it isn't hard for me to get out of the house, even in bad weather. Although, I will ask you all if you have found that after you've lost weight, you are colder in the winter. I swear I have never remembered being this cold in my whole life. I am guessing it is because I lost my extra layer. But is that even logical? I don't know how the whole thing works.

All suggestions are welcome!

p.s. Yes, here is my favorite photo of my new niece. This was her Halloween costume :)

Don't the road runners have a run club?

I'm trying the Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred dvd this month. I'll let you know if it's worth it!

HA! I was just about to recommend the Jillian Michaels 30-day Shred too! If you have Comcast OnDemand cable it's on the ExerciseTV section for free. But if not, you can order it on DVD. It's a great workout for people with small workout space. My living room space is about the same as yours and I easily can do her moves, as they are confined --- not much space is needed to do her moves. It's a really HARD workout too -- she really kicks my ass every time. She combines upper and lower body in most moves so you are getting maximum burn. The moves are really simple, but very strenous.

wow, two recommendations must mean this is a good dvd! i will get it from netflix to try it out - that's what i used to do with the 'crunch' video series, but they have become to dance-y for me. call me intrigued!

Delete was me - had to fix two typos that were bugging me.

Here is a list of basics (that I agree with) that can all be done in a tiny space:

I am not familiar with Jillian's DVD but will be eager to hear what you think.

I suggest free weights in general - don't need a lot of room effective use of your time

check out the DVD's from your library in addition to Netflix

COLD THING:
Dress in layers -

consider wearing long underwear made for running (that wicks out the sweat) on bad days.

or at least wear old fashioned under shirts or cami's under your clothes

change socks frequently (old boy scout trick that really works)

if I am somewhere that I know I will be cold - I use foot warmers - they are sold in the hunting department - they stick on the bottom of your socks and stay warm for 6 hours or so.

Wear hats

drink at least room temperature drinks - nothing chilled - water for example - I don't even drink it as cold as it runs from the tap - I let it warm to room temp.

drink hot herbal tea

the most effective thing I have found is to exercise every day to really get my blood moving. If I have a slug day where I do not exercise - I am FREEZING ALL DAY!!!
